Cotton, Linen, Silk and Viscose: A Manufacturer's Guide to Natural Fabrics

Textile 101 — notes from a manufacturer. "Natural fabric" is the phrase every label reaches for, and it covers four very different materials with four very different origins. Here is what each one actually is, and where it earns its place.

First, what "natural" actually covers

There are three honest categories, and most confusion comes from collapsing them into one.

Plant fibres are grown and spun: cotton from the seed boll, linen from the flax stem. Animal fibres come from a creature: silk from the cocoon, wool from the fleece. Then there is a third group — regenerated fibres — where cellulose from a plant is dissolved and re-spun by chemistry. Viscose lives here. It begins as wood and ends as fabric, but the middle of that journey happens in a chemical plant, not a field.

A fourth thing you will meet constantly is the blend. Any mix of the above, and by law the label must state the percentages. Read them.

Cotton — the one that breathes

Cotton is a seed fibre: the fluffy boll that forms around the cotton seed, harvested, cleaned, spun into yarn. Under a microscope each fibre is a flattened, twisted, hollow tube, and that hollow core is the whole story. It absorbs around 8% of its weight in moisture and releases it to the air, which is why a cotton shirt feels dry even when you are not.

Best for: daily wear, and the Indian summer in particular. Watch out for: creasing, and shrinkage on the first wash if the fabric was not pre-shrunk properly at the mill.

Linen — engineered by the flax stalk

Linen comes from the stem of the flax plant — a bast fibre, meaning it is the structural fibre that holds the plant upright. That origin explains its behaviour: the fibres are long, straight and stiff, so linen has a dry crisp hand, an open airy weave, and remarkable strength. It is one of the few fibres that is stronger wet than dry, and it dries faster than any other natural fibre.

Best for: peak summer, the coast, travel. Watch out for: creasing — though with linen the crease is the character, not a defect. If you want linen that does not crease, you want a linen blend, and you should know that is what you are buying.

Silk — a protein, not a plant

Silk is the outlier: a protein fibre, extruded by the silkworm as it builds its cocoon. It is also the only natural fibre that arrives as a continuous filament rather than short staple lengths — a single cocoon unwinds into hundreds of metres of unbroken thread. That is why silk has a sheen nothing else quite matches, and why it takes fine print detail so beautifully.

Best for: occasion wear, fluid drape, and prints where clarity matters. Watch out for: direct sun, perspiration and deodorant — all three degrade the protein over time. Silk is strong, but it is chemistry, not indestructibility.

Viscose — natural origin, man-made fibre

Here is the one worth being precise about. Viscose (also sold as rayon) starts as wood pulp — genuinely a plant — which is dissolved into a thick solution and extruded through spinnerets to form fibre. So the raw material is natural and the fibre is man-made. The correct word is semi-synthetic, and a label that simply says "natural" is being generous with itself.

None of which makes it a bad fabric. Viscose gives you silk-like drape and a cool hand at a fraction of silk's price, and it is highly absorbent — around 13% moisture regain, the highest of these four. Watch out for: it loses a significant share of its strength when wet, and it shrinks. Wash it cold, wash it gently, and never wring it.

If the environmental side matters to you, look for lyocell or modal — the same idea, produced in closed-loop systems that recover the solvents.

The number that actually matters

Moisture regain is the share of its own weight a fibre absorbs from the air. Roughly: viscose ~13%, linen ~12%, silk ~11%, cotton ~8%. Polyester sits under 1%.

That gap is the entire argument for natural fibres in Indian conditions. Your body cools itself by evaporating sweat, and a fibre that holds and releases moisture lets that system work. A fibre that holds none traps it against your skin.

How to make them last

Cotton and linen: hot water is fine, sun-drying is fine, iron while still damp. Both get softer with age.

Silk: cold hand wash, never wring, dry flat in the shade. Direct sun will dull and weaken it.

Viscose: cold and gentle, dry flat, do not hang it wet — it is at its weakest saturated and will stretch out of shape under its own weight.

Most fabric that gets written off as "poor quality" was simply washed the wrong way. Treated properly, every one of these four outlives a synthetic equivalent several times over.
