The Print Pairing Guide: What to Wear With Every Print

Buying a printed shirt is the easy part. The question that follows every one of our Friday drops is the same: "lovely print - but what do I wear it with?" This guide answers it print by print, with exact colour pairings and outfit formulas, using pieces currently in our collection.

This week's pairing subjects: Azure Canvas, Indigo Rose and Red Serenity

1. Painterly & abstract prints: anchor with one colour

Expressive, brushstroke prints look busy only when the rest of the outfit competes. The rule: pull the calmest colour out of the print and repeat it below the waist.

Outfit formula
Painterly shirt + one-colour bottom + metallic flat
+ + azure · ivory · gold accents

The Azure Canvas Shirt works hardest over ivory or stone trousers - the print stays the hero, the outfit stays calm.

2. Dark florals: denim's best friend

Deep-base florals are the most forgiving prints in the wardrobe - they behave like solids from a distance. Dark blue denim, black trousers, even tan skirts all work.

Outfit formula
Dark floral shirt (French tuck) + straight denim + white sneaker
+ + indigo · denim blue · white

Try it with the Indigo Rose Printed Shirt - indigo on indigo is a tonal trick that always looks intentional.

3. Bold reds: let neutrals do the work

A red print brings its own energy; everything else should whisper. White, cream, beige or black - nothing louder.

Outfit formula
Red print shirt + white wide-leg trouser + tan sandal
+ + scarlet · white · tan

The Red Serenity Shirt over white is a complete summer-evening outfit - add gold hoops and stop there.

4. Conversation prints: the personality pieces

Prints that tell a story - books, palms, city scenes - are ice-breakers. Style them simply and let people lean in to look. Black bottoms, minimal accessories, confident smile. The Bookshelf Stories Printed Shirt is our favourite example.

Do's and don'ts of print pairing

Do
  • Repeat one colour from the print elsewhere in the outfit
  • Treat checks and small dots as neutrals - they mix with anything
  • Keep jewellery to one metal when the print is loud
  • French-tuck relaxed shirts to define the waist
Don't
  • Pair two large-scale prints of equal loudness
  • Add a printed bag to a printed shirt "to match"
  • Fear colour on the bottom - matched-tone trousers elevate a print
  • Iron prints on high heat (low heat keeps edges crisp)
