Crepe, Explained: The Fabric That Bridges Monsoon and Festive

What crepe actually is

Crepe isn't a fibre — it's a construction. The yarn is given a hard twist before weaving, and that tension leaves the finished cloth with its signature fine, pebbled crinkle. The name comes from the French crêpe, meaning crimped. Our crepe is a natural crepe: plant-derived yarn with that high-twist texture, not the polyester "crepe" that dominates fast fashion.

Why the crinkle matters

Three practical things follow from that twisted yarn. Drape: crepe falls in soft, fluid folds rather than standing crisp — which is why a crepe shirt skims instead of ballooning. Wrinkle resistance: the texture hides creases; a crepe shirt comes out of a suitcase looking ironed. Quick drying: the open, textured weave releases moisture fast — the reason we call crepe the monsoon-to-festive bridge. It shrugs off humidity in August and drapes elegantly under festive lights in October.

Crepe vs the rest of the wardrobe

Against our organic poplin cotton, crepe trades crispness for flow — poplin holds a sharp collar line, crepe moves. Against cotton satin (see the cotton satin pieces), crepe is matte where satin has sheen. And against Schiffli, crepe's texture is woven in rather than embroidered on. None is better — they're different tools. If your week runs office → dinner → travel, crepe is the one that does all three without complaint.

How to spot good crepe

Hold it to the light: the crinkle should be fine and even, not blotchy. Scrunch a handful and let go — quality crepe springs back with barely a crease. And check the drape on the bias: it should fall in ripples, not stick out stiffly. Ours prints beautifully because the texture breaks up flat colour — painterly and scenic prints look almost brushstroked on crepe.

Styling it

Crepe dresses up faster than cotton: tucked into tailored trousers with gold hoops it's dinner-ready, and its drape flatters untucked over slim bottoms too. Caring for crepe

Machine wash cold on gentle, dry in shade, and iron on low — lightly, on the reverse — if you iron at all; over-pressing flattens the very texture you paid for. Treated this way, the crinkle (and our anti-bleed, anti-peel, anti-shrink print) outlasts seasons.
