Poplin, Crepe or Satin? Choosing the Right Printed-Shirt Fabric

Every shirt we make starts as one of three fabrics: 100% organic poplin cotton, natural crepe or cotton satin. The print may be identical, but the shirt is not — each fabric drapes, shines and wears differently. Here is the honest comparison we give customers at the Kala Ghoda store, written down.

Poplin: the everyday workhorse

Poplin is a tightly woven, smooth cotton with a crisp, matte finish. It holds its shape, takes a collar beautifully, and is the most breathable of the three — the fabric to reach for in Mumbai heat and for long office days. It creases the way all crisp cottons do, which is part of its charm, but if you want a shirt that looks freshly pressed at 6pm, crepe will suit you better. Poplin suits: office wear, daytime plans, anyone who loves a structured, classic shirt.

Crepe: the drape that doesn't crease

Crepe has a faintly pebbled surface and a fluid fall. It skims rather than stands, resists creasing remarkably well, and dries fast — the travel and monsoon favourite. Cotton satin: the quiet shine

Cotton satin is woven so the surface catches light — a soft lustre, not a synthetic gleam. Prints look deeper and slightly richer on it, which is why it's the pick for evenings and celebration season. Crisp and breathable for every day: poplin. Fluid, crease-free, travel-proof: crepe. A little lustre for evenings and festivals: satin.
